Teaching for Neurodiversity
Teaching for Neurodiversity is a training session that I have delivered in a number of settings, including at the Royal College of Music to students interested in teaching, at the conference for the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music, and at music education hub Berkshire Music Trust.
Each time the session is different to meet the needs and priorities of the educators in the room. I cover the basic areas of:
What is neurodiversity?
What barriers might students be facing?
How to foster an inclusive mindset
Teaching strategies to meet the needs of today’s diverse classrooms
At Berkshire Music Trust their team was interested in learning more about masking in neurodivergent girls, and we also explored practical and inclusive music activities to use in large and small group lessons.
At the ABRSM and RCM we looked more deeply into teaching strategies for 1-1 students, and allowed time for “clinic” sessions so I could answer questions about individual students.
